On 19th September our club participated in the annual Welsh Gymnastics Novice finals and Intermediate championships. The novice finals is a team competition where the top 5 gymnasts in each Welsh area compete together. The team is identified during the large regional competitions where there are many competitors. Each team then competes for the Welsh title within each age group.
This year, in the 8-9 yrs category we had 3 gymnasts make the team; Ami Howarth, Sienna Wilkinson and Martha Hockridge- Ford. The girls were fantastic and helped their team (South East) take the Welsh title with Martha becoming Welsh 8-9 yrs champion and Sienna placing 4th.
The South East 10/11 yrs team took the silver medal with Capital's Tegan Willis placing 3rd overall and Mollie Curtis a very respectable 7th, just missing out on a ribbon!
Ella Hockridge-Ford and Aoife Hill made the South East team in the 12+ category and contributed towards another team gold for our area with Ella placing 4th overall. The South East team was also crowned overall champions this year- fantastic for all south east clubs.
The following day was the Welsh Intermediate championships where we had lots of gymnasts competing. For some this was the first time competing at Intermediate level and all did extremely well. After a tough competition our very own Shayla Mansfield was crowned Welsh 9yrs Champion and took the bronze medal on bars and the silver on beam. Our 10/11 team (Ellie John, Neve Eades-Black, Natalie Scurlock, Anwen Good) took the silver medal with Neve placing 2nd overall and Anwen 5th out of 60 gymnasts from across Wales! Neve also took the beam title and 2nd on bars with Anwen taking the silver medal on beam.
Elan Chidlow, Tia Mace and Amelia Saunders made up our 12/13 yrs team which was a tough competition. However, the girls did well and Amelia came away with a 4th place overall, 3rd on vault and 2nd on bars with Tia coming 5th on vault. Holly Brignall had an equally challenging competition but managed to place 4th on bars- well done girls.
